Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in San Francisco. His legacy has become a national symbol of the struggle for human rights and freedom of expression.

In response to an invitation from the Department of Public Works, the San Francisco Arts Commission and the San Francisco Prize, we entered a design that demonstrates one person’s message spreading throughout a community.

Our entry is a commemorative work of public art, consisting of a forest of vibrant vigil luminaries which are collected together at the corner of Market and Castro streets. The vigil luminaries are dispersed beyond the Castro district, and as their presence dwindles in density with distance, they become infused with significance.
